Robotics and education technology

Robotics engineer and academy founder

Curriculum, classroom robots, competitions, and the software parents and staff use every week.

I founded Turtleback Robotics Academy in Prince George, Virginia. Students ages 6–16 design, wire, program, and compete with real robots. I also write the pathways and the tools that connect the lab to enrollment and the classroom.

Turtleback Robotics Academy

Hands-on robotics for ages 6–16

Operational Product

Classes, lab, and competition

Students wire circuits, program robots, design parts, and compete. Programs include weekly classes, after-school lab, teen club, online robotics, 3D design and printing, web development, robot battles, and project-based STEM.

  • VEX IQ and LEGO Education SPIKE Prime builds and challenges
  • Raspberry Pi, Pico W, ESP32, motors, servos, sensors, and circuits
  • Scratch, Blockly, MicroPython, and generated source in Turtleblock Studio
  • 3D design, fabrication, game development, and capstone projects
  • Small in-person groups (10–12) and live online labs

Prince George, Virginia · Tri-Cities and Richmond

I write the pathways, adapt concepts to age, run the lab, and keep the parent and staff software connected to what happens in the room.

Operational Product

Turtleblock Studio

Students snap Blockly, inspect generated MicroPython, test in a pin simulator, then run on Pico W, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and Makeblock hardware over Web Serial.

Completed Project

VSU Robotics Teaching Assistant

Two semesters supporting Virginia State University robotics labs: programming, construction, hardware integration, testing, and turning theory into working robot behavior.

Hardware and embedded

Prototypes and system designs

Engineering experiments in control, electronics, and physical computing. Prototypes or designs, not production products.

Prototype

Garage Door Safety Controller

Pico-based sensing, five-minute auto-close, override window, servo actuation, and LED status.

Pico · MicroPython · GPIO · PWM

Prototype

ESP32 Infrared Controller

Capture, store, and retransmit IR remote commands for automated device control.

ESP32 · IR · signal timing

Prototype

Manual Robotic Arm

Three DC motor channels, servo claw, bidirectional control, and DPDT human-machine interface.

Motors · servos · power distribution

Prototype

Pico Classroom Cart

Raspberry Pi Pico vehicle prototype with remote control and sensor-based obstacle response. Not a production or on-road vehicle.

Lab Work

Educational Robotics

VEX IQ, SPIKE Prime, Pico W, ESP32, Scratch, Blockly, and 3D-designed classroom demonstrations.

Completed Project

ROS 2 and Simulink

Publisher/subscriber robotics exercises in ROS 2, plus control coursework in MATLAB and Simulink.

ROS 2 · Python · Linux · MATLAB

Supporting software

The academy’s production tools

I also built the enrollment and classroom-operations software. See software for the engineering detail.

Staff workspace

Private Front Desk tools for attendance, classes, curriculum, and family communications. Staff access is not published here.

Additional leadership and domain experience

What else supports this work

Army leadership

23 years as a First Sergeant. Standards, training, and accountability that transfer to running a lab and a staff.

Community

Hope in the Streets volunteer and youth STEM programs across Virginia’s Tri-Cities region.
